The Best Luggage Sets

Buying luggage doesn’t make my pulse race as much as, say, buying a new purse or shoes, but it’s something I have to buy every few years. If I get it right, it makes traveling much more pleasant.

A few years ago I finally bought my first luggage set. Before then, I just had one carry-on bag that I had for years. I don’t know why, but buying a luggage set made me feel very grown up.

When it comes to buying luggage sets, you can either go budget, spend a few bucks more or buy a luggage set that becomes an investment. Each has their merits, so I will list them when talking about the best luggage sets I’ve found.

BUDGET

Great for the budget traveler, the Rockland 2-piece luggage set comes in 31 colors (wow!) and includes one upright carry-on luggage and one under-seat tote bag. Used together onboard a plane, the upright luggage will fit easily into the overhead compartment, while the tote bag fits under your seat.

GREAT FOR OCCASIONAL USE OR CHILDREN

How often do you travel and how long do you want your luggage to last? If you are a frequent flier, spend a little more on luggage. Otherwise, buy this set and be impressed by how far your money goes. It’s great for children to use or for occasional use.

LIGHTWEIGHT

The upright carry-on is 19 x 13 x 9 inches and weighs only 6 lbs. It’s on the smaller side, but would be perfect for international flights, where luggage sizes need to be smaller.

SECURE HANDLING

The telescopic handle can be extended and then slide down when not in use.  The in-line skate wheels glide better and are more durable than the flimsy plastic or rubber wheels you normally find on luggage.

To increase handling, the exterior features 2 padded handles, that make it easy to grab the suitcase from a trunk or when it’s on its side.

The bottom features a hard plastic stability bar, which supports the suitcase when upright.

EXPANDABLE CAPACITY

It can be expanded to increase the depth to a few inches, you just unzip the zipper and voila, increased storage capacity. Outside it has 2 full sized-pockets which open with a zipper. Inside, it has one mesh zippered pocket, which can hold a pair of jeans or any loose items.

EXTRA UNDERSEAT TOTE BAG

The smaller tote bag is great to keep under your seat when you’ve boarded the plane. The outside features 2 zippers, one to the main compartment, and the other to a smaller compartment. The shoulder strap is padded to keep from slipping or straining your shoulder. It has a strap on the back, which can be slid over the upright luggage’s handles. Therefore, the luggage can be rolled together without the tote bag toppling over.

Great for the budget traveler, the U.S. Traveler Rio 2-piece luggage set includes one upright carry-on and one under-seat tote bag.

GREAT FOR OCCASIONAL USE OR CHILDREN

This set is a great value, especially if you don’t travel often or want something less expensive for your children or grandchildren. It has EVA padding in the front and corner protectors by the wheels, so although it’s not the sturdiest, it will handle a fair amount of abuse.

LIGHTWEIGHT

The upright carry-on measures 21 x 13.5 x 8.5 inches and weighs only 6 lbs. Compared with the previous Rockland luggage, it is 2 inches taller.

SECURE HANDLING

The retractable handle can be extended by pushing a button, then slide down into the back when not in use.  The inline skate wheels glide well and are durable, compared to flimsy plastic or rubber wheels found on most budget luggage.

EXTRA UNDERSEAT TOTE BAG

Great for keeping under your seat, the smaller bag is perfect for carrying snacks, extra shoes, medicine, or things you want within reach on the plane.

The tote measures 14 x 10 x 6 inches and can be stacked above the upright carry-on, by using the “piggyback” strap on the back. Just slide the strap over the carry-on’s retractable handles, and you’re good to go.

The main compartment is very spacious, as well as the smaller compartment in front. The shoulder strap is padded to keep from slipping or straining your shoulder. After a few hours shuttling between check-in, customs, and my boarding gate, I need good shoulder support.

Started in 1933, American Tourister is known for their well-made luggage. So much so, that in 1993 they were acquired by none other than Samsonite. Ever since then, they continue to delight travelers, myself included.

GREAT FOR FAMILIES

Great for long trips or with a large family, this 3-piece set is wonderful. It includes one large upright suitcase, one carry-on, and one duffle-style boarding bag and comes in 3 colors to choose from.

From smallest to biggest:

The boarding bag measures: 15 x 10 x 8 inches

LIGHTWEIGHT

Each suitcase is very lightweight, due to soft-sided construction. I wouldn’t say this is the sturdiest luggage, but the price is unbeatable for a 3-piece luggage set. Although, the corners are reinforced so it will last longer.

VERSATILE STORAGE

The boarding tote bag features one main compartment, which holds quite alot. On the front is another compartment, which is reached by a zipper.

To be used as a carry-on, the medium-sized upright fits easily into the overhead compartment. It features a telescopic handle, 2 in-line skate wheels, 2 padded front pockets, and carrying handles on the sides.

The capacity of the large upright luggage can be increased by unzipping the expandable zipper. I personally don’t need that much space, but you could use it between 2 people or pack to your heart’s content.  It features a telescopic handle, 2 in-line skate wheels, 2 padded front pockets, and carrying handles on the sides.

Enter, the Merax Travelhouse 3-piece luggage set. It has oodles of style at an attractive price. People will think you paid 2 or 3 times more than what you actually paid, but let’s keep that between us, shall we?

If you worry about your luggage wearing down or breaking, I recommend this set. The hard-shelled exterior is made of ABS, which is extremely lightweight and durable. It also helps protect the contents of your luggage, which is important when you are packing delicate items.

The handles are metal and feel sturdy. According to the manufacturer, they’ve been tested 20,000 times.

EXPANDABLE

Each suitcase can be expanded, transforming them from their original size to a super-sized version. The expandable feature gives you 25% more packing capacity.  So if you suddenly decide you need that extra storage in your suitcase, it’s as easy as pulling a zipper.

Inside is quite simple but functional. The luggage is divided into 2 halves, so you have equal storage in each lid. They are separated by a zipped flap to keep everything organized. Inside cross straps keep everything from moving around. You also have a small zipper pouch that is sewn into the bag for storing small items.

EASY TO MANEUVER

Having tested many suitcases with spinner wheels, I can never go back to fixed wheels ever again. It’s like going from modern Power Steering to an old car from the 1970’s. It feels so clunky getting around without spinner wheels. Thankfully, each suitcase comes with 4 spinner wheels for easy rolling.

The ergonomic aluminum telescoping handle has a push-button to extend and retract it when not in use. It feels comfortable to hold and adds to the overall maneuverability of the spinner-wheel design.

FIT INSIDE ONE ANOTHER

Each suitcase is small enough to fit inside each other like Russian nesting dolls. So when you’re not traveling you don’t have to find enough space for storing 3 separate suitcases. They all fit into the largest suitcase to save space.

FREE LOCK

Each suitcase has a side-mounted lock, which is a nice touch.

For something a little more sleek and long-lasting, look no further than the Samsonite Omni Spinner Set. The company claims that it will look great on the 100th trip as it does on the 1st. I don’t doubt that claim one bit.

I don’t know about you, but when I travel, I also have little ones to bring along with me. After a few flights to visit family for the holidays, I can tell you, they need their own kids luggage. They can bring their books, toys, and they feel less anxious traveling. I thought it was worth mentioning, because so many of us travel with small children.

It’s made of the same durable and lightweight ABS material that adult-sized luggage is made of.

SPINNER WHEELS

The wheels are 360-degree spinners, which for children is essential. My kids love to pull their luggage all around the airport terminal, to the annoyance of a few travelers.

MULTI-USE

When we’re not traveling, this set works really well as school bags or even when we’re at the beach. Because they are so durable, it is a good value even when not used for travel purposes.
